About Living Without Borders / Viviendo Sin Fronteras

The United Coalition for Im/migrant Rights is thrilled to bring you the 3rd annual Living Without Borders encuentro. This conference was developed to inspire participants to dismantle oppressive divisions within society, eradicate discrimination, and mobilize the community through transformative education. It is a progressive conference and the only one of its kind in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The vision of Living Without Borders / Viviendo Sin Fronteras is centered on the belief that social justice is not possible without engaging in a multidimensional struggle to eradicate all unven power relationships and discriminatory forces in society — including the enforcement of national borders, the segregation of people based on arbitrary lines of political jurisdiction, and the construction of privilege for officially-recognized citizens over immigrants and migrants. We hope the encuentro will open up a space for discussion on the fundamentals of a borderless consciousness, and the application of these fundamentals through activism. We aim to create an encounter that will instill the spirit of grassroots organizing in hopes to awaken, inspire, and reinvigorate the activist within each of us.

Sound good? Register to attend the encuentro! All are welcome to attend, and we look forward to seeing you there.

About the organizers: U.C.I.R. of Las Vegas

The United Coalition for Im/migrant Rights, UCIR, is an activist group for immigration freedom based in Las Vegas, Nevada. We meet regularly on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. We sponsor educational forums and know-your-rights workshops, and we work together with other community organizers to organize actions such as the May 23, 2008 March for the DREAM and the annual May 1 march for immigrant rights.

UCIR was born when we bridged the collective vision of grassroots students and community activists to fight for freedom, autonomy, and self-determination of immigrants, migrants, and other marginalized communities. Our seemingly short journey began in 2006 during the citywide student walkouts in Las Vegas. We continued to organize the largest grassroots mobilization in the his/herstory of Nevada (together with the his/herstoric mobilizations that happened throughout the world) on April 10 and May 1, 2006.

The urgency to continue in the movement gave rise to the conceptualization of this encuentro. We hosted the first ever Living Without Borders / Viviendo Sin Fronteras conference on the weekend of August 16–17, 2008, and soon began planning to make the conference an annual event. Given the dangerously violent, destructive, repressive, and discriminatory conditions faced by im/migrants worldwide, now is the time to continue in our struggle, by any means necessary. We hope that our encuentro will encourage all of us who gather there to think what may seem unthinkable and envision r(e)volution (Elizabeth Betita Martinez).
